Students are returning to school after many years of being out are taking a large leap back into the college life. Some students are making quick and simple changes that help them ease back into routine.
Some students are not so quick on picking up on new technologies and programs that the school requires for some courses. WVU Parkersburg offers help that could really benefit those who could use course refreshers. The Student Success Center has the perfect person to offer all this help to the students for free.
Chris Huddleston teaches Middle College that is joint with WVU Parkersburg and RESA (Regional Education Service Agency), he also teaches Reading 009 and English 049. Huddleston has also taught computer sciences in past semesters. Huddleston helps tutor in the Student Success Center with a basic math, basic English, and computer science classes.
"It is really helpful for instructors to have a place like this for students to get tutored because you have students that learn at different paces, so some people get it right away and then some people need more help then what they would get in an hour class," Huddleston said.
Some students have multiple needs that can't be met in a regular class time.
"For those people that have to take math in computer labs, especially those displaced workers might have two problems. One needs help with the math being that maybe it has been a long time since they have done math, and also maybe they are not computer savvy so they might need help in both areas as well."
A big success story that stood out to him was when he had the chance to help a student that currently attends WVU Parkersburg, obtain a GED, being the first person in the family to make it to college and to receive a scholarship.
Huddleston and other tutors are available in the Student Success Center Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free tutoring services.
