Experience and confidence are two important qualities for a successful career. Following that one would need a good education and determination. WVU Parkersburg alumna Jessica Flint,23, says she acquired just that during her time in college.
Jessica attended WVU Parkersburg for three years in the registered nurse program and graduated in 2010. She chose WVU Parkersburg because it is a good school and was convenient at the time. Although Jessica faced challenges being four months pregnant during her first semester, she was able to persevere. The convenience and affordability that the college offered seemed like an excellent fit for her at the time.
Jessica's main goal to help her get through the grueling program was a better life for her daughter. “WVU Parkersburg has an excellent nursing program. I had instructors that really helped the students and did all they could to prepare us for the real world,” Jessica said.
Each semester the students had nursing clinicals and stimulations. This means they were able to have hands-on training with mannequins and learn basic skills of nursing. They also learn how to operate the software and equipment that is in a standard hospital room.
While still in school she was offered a job. She started her new position just one week after her graduation. She felt prepared because of the hands on training she had at WVU Parkersburg.
Jessica is currently a registered nurse on the orthopedic floor at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Parkersburg. This means she works with injuries to bones and problems with the skeletal structure. “I knew what I was getting myself into and was ready for the transition,”she said. She has been there for about a year and loves her job.
She is also attending a RN-BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program through West Virginia University and will graduate next year.
Although her schedule is busy she has the leisure time to enjoy with her daughter and friends. The persistence of her teachers and her determination to finish helped her be as advanced as she is at such a young age. She feels she made the right decision and will always remember the time she had at the college.
