The students at WVU Parkersburg elected Derick Wolfe as the new student government president at the end of the spring semester. However, during the summer, he was offered a career opportunity he could not turn away. Although Wolfe is still enrolled as a junior he simply does not have the time to devote to student government.
“It was a very hard decision for him, but we talked about it. I mean you go to college to get a good job and this is possibly a career job for him.” said Tom Yencha, director of student activities.
According to the constitution of student government, the first of three vice presidents- the vice president of communications- is the one asked to fill the void. In this case, Loren Bell gladly accepted.
Student Government holds their general student body elections during the spring semester every year. In addition, freshman representatives are elected every semester, which is coming up on Sept. 19 and 20.
Last spring was the first semester with online voting through OLSIS. This was proven to be a success with a voter turn out higher than expected.
“We received about one hundred more votes than we normally do,” Yencha said, “and hopefully, next year we get a hundred more than that.”
The first event student government was involved with was Freshmen convocation. It took place on Aug. 29 with guest speaker, Dr. Jeffrey Cousins who is a West Virginia heart surgeon and pioneer of robotic assisted heart surgery.
The second event this semester was the 9/11 memorial, which took place on Sept. 7 in the multi purpose room. The special tenth anniversary of the tragic events featured guest speaker Cindy Bullock, sister of Mary Lou Hague who was a 9/11 victim and Parkersburg native. Student government meets every other Monday. The next meeting will take place on Monday, Sept. 19 in the community room and is open for everyone to attend.
