The Multicultural Awareness Coalition is a student organization that enhances student, staff and faculty awareness of the numerous contributions made by diverse groups in the United states. They will be looked at in terms of history, culture, and achievements. They actively promote the virtues of democracy, tolerance, and respect for all people regardless of their cultural or ethnic backgrounds.
Among the groups that one will learn about are those Americans of German, Japanese, Chinese, Hispanic, Italian, Russian, Swiss, Serbian, Indian, Arabic, Jewish and Irish ancestry. Their motto is “Unity in Diversity Through a Common Humanity.”
The MAC sponsors many guest speakers, maintains an education bulletin board on campus, take field trips, has meetings for learning about ethnic groups in the United States. The group joins up with the Social Justice Committee to implement programs, trips, workshops, and seminars on treating each other with civility, kindness, fairness, and understanding. The groups planned their first event on Oct. 10 from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. in room 1314. Marina Wells, a Hispanic American, will do a presentation called “Growing up Hispanic.”
A reception will follow in the Community Room (Rm. 1300) where the Spanish class will present many Hispanic foods and displays. Students and staff are encouraged to attend.
