The second season of the Riverhawks Golf team has begun and is off to a running start. The season began with the Burger King/OVU Invitational tournament at Woodridge Golf Club, where they fnished 7 out of 11 colleges.
The tournament started off in hot fashion in more ways than one. With temperatures soaring on day one of the two day tournament, golfers had to be sure to keep their cool. No one accomplished this better than Indiana U of P golfer Zack Kempa who fired a scorching opening round of 7-under 64. He was closely followed up by teammate Sean Sweithelm and his sizzling 3-under 68.
Solid support from the other three team members and the large first-round lead led IUP to victory in this two day Invitational with a team total of 572. University of Charleston was a close second after a day two comeback in the rain and soggy conditions, finished with a 577. West Chester University finished third 17 strokes back, and in a tie 4th only three strokes behind was West Liberty and Potomac St CC. West Virgina Weslyen fired a 613 to take home 6th followed by our own Riverhawks at 617.
The WVU Parkersburg Riverhawks were lead by strong day one outings from top to bottom. Derrick Myers fired a one-over 72. Ben Kunselman aided with a 2-over 73. Tim Martin and Brian Hayhurst shot 74 and 75 respectively. Roy Kunsman rounded out the teams day with a 93.
The second day was full of wet weather, greens, and players. It was a struggle to stay dry all afternoon. This was evident by the drop off in scores on day two. Myers with an 80, Hayhurst a 78, Kunselman carded and 81 and Martin and 84. Kunsman stayed steady with a closing 94.
At this point in time there are no future scheduled tounrnaments but dates are expected soon.
