It is six weeks in to the semester and who couldn’t use a laugh? WVU Parkersburg is bringing back the Backdoor Comedy show. The show will be held in the multi-purpose room Saturday, Oct. 1st; doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m.
When the comedy club visited in the past, comedian Henry Cho was the headline act preforming. The night before his performance on campus; he appeared at the Jay Leno Show on national television. During his interview with Leno he announced that he would be preforming at WVU Parkersburg that following evening. The ticket sales for the event went from 100 tickets to 500 the very next day. The Back Door Comedy Club actually got its name from the first two shows people literally came through the back door for the event.
The Back Door Comedy Club, throughout the years has had several acts that go on to achieve great successful careers such as Kevin James and Ray Romano. This year’s event headlines a few acts the audience may recognize. Agency GG Gregg and WVU Parkersburg presents a three-time comedy festival winner, Danny Browning. He’s famous for headlining clubs, colleges, corporate shows, fund-raisers - all while being edgy without being offensive. A seasoned professional, he has also performed in a surplus of casinos, resorts, military bases and high schools. According to GGGregg.org, Danny was chosen from a nationwide search to perform at the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival in Atlanta. His performance earned him countrywide recognition and work prospects in some of the best comedy clubs in the country.
In 2009, he was voted the “Funniest Person in Lexington,” a competition that included over 40 comedians. In 2008, Danny was showcased in the Chicago Snubfest, a comedy jubilee that featured comedians from across the nation who have been “snubbed” by other events. His act earned a winning spot in the top three.
Also, Cutting Edge Entertainment will be featuring comedian Jay Black. Black originally started working as an English teacher. After a few years and a few teacher-of-the-year nominations, he decided to take his high-energy day-time act and adjust it to club scenery. Through two years in the club and college route, he has stunned audiences with his creative take on absurd existence. Jay has the same command of a club or hall as he did in the classroom during the days when he kept a class of 30 teenagers captivated. Jay can work in any room and his comedy carries with it a "soft-R" rating suitable for any adult audience. Refreshments and snacks will be provided to audiences in a “comedy club” atmosphere. Tickets are sold in the business office for $3 or two for $5 in advance, tickets will be $5 at the door.
