“Lyke omg u guyz. Soooo excited for tonight. Shower, eating, finishing getting ready and then out with ma girlssss. <3 :)” Log on to Facebook and this is generally what you’re going to find. It has turned from Facebook: a social utility that connects you with people around you to Facebook: a social utility that allows you to share every oh-so-exciting detail of your oh-so-boring life.
It seems that these days, everyone has a Facebook profile and those who don’t are looked at as if they were aliens. Social networking sites such as this have turned face-to-face communication into wall-to-wall communication.
With friends all over the world, Facebook is a handy tool to keep in touch with people that you may not get to see often. It is an easy platform to share stories, pictures and whatever else you would like to share with the world. Having a best friend that lives in Germany, it’s not always convenient to Skype or call one another, so Facebook allows us to keep in touch via wall posts and messages.
For some, Facebook has become an addiction. I am no exception to that. Applications on phones make it even more convenient to access Facebook and I find myself, as well as many others around me, checking it constantly. Schools are blocking it as it is a distraction and students are paying more attention to it then their actual schoolwork.
Like an addiction to drugs, a change in it can cause an uprising from the users. Facebook has been making changes every few months, but the most recent one has seemed to create the biggest stir. The new layout has pushed even the most die-hard users to switch to Google+.
Even as I am writing this I am flipping back and forth from Word to Facebook, making an article that should take less than half an hour to write stretch into a three-hour-long process.
While it is nice to see what people are up to, it is not necessary to post what you are doing every second of your life. I’m glad you’re taking a shower, I’d honestly be disgusted if you didn’t, but I really don’t need that clogging up my news feed that is already littered with Farmville and the Sims Social requests.
It is a wonderful means to keep up with friends, but don’t lose out on real life while posting about it. Log off your profile, turn it off on your phone and go really have a conversation with your friends. “Just finished my article for the Chronicle!!!!!1 Time for bed. Lolz. Night readers. :)”
